Creative Spaces at Five Elms Primary School
Event date:
Five Elms Primary School
From the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, Five Elms Primary school has been working with Enabling Enterprise since 2015 to develop a set of eight Essential Skills in their students. Over the years, students across the whole school have been developing their Essential Skills through Lesson-Time Projects as well as Challenge Days and Trips to Employers.
Creative Spaces
After an assembly to introduce their challenge, students quickly set to work to become architects and builders. The task, to design and build a new community arts centre for their local area, certainly got the creative juices flowing! Teams shared great ideas whilst using their imagination and Problem Solving skills to decide where to build their space and what materials to use - they could not wait to get building! The day culminated with teams Presenting to their classes, celebrating their creativity and reflecting on much improved teamwork as the day went on. Most teams had used their essential skills to such a high standard that it was no surprise the scoreboards in each classroom were so full of skill points!
Problem Solving skills culminate in some brilliant designs for a new community arts centre!Teamwork and Creativity skills combined as students in Year 2 construct their model art centres.
Taking inspiration from nature and apply all the Essential Skills to create and present their Creative Spaces.
I enjoy using creativity. I'm also learning more about jobs I can do in the future.
Student, Year 5
It's fantastic to have the skills as the focus today. The points are so motivating for them. Our challenge is to help the Year 6s see how they can also use these skills in their Maths and English.
Teacher, Year 6
The children have absolutely loved the challenge today. While they were building, I have been able to step back completely and observe them working in their teams.
