Event date:
Longlands Primary School
Longlands Primary, located near Sidcup in Kent, have been working with the Skills Builder Partnership since 2014. In school, students are busy developing their Essential Skills by taking part in their Enterprise Weeks, where each year group runs exciting projects, and taking part in whole-school Challenge Days. Outside of school, students also put their Essential Skills into practice in the workplace during trips to employers, working alongside professionals from a range of sectors to explore the world of work.

Listen up Lawyers
From the moment they arrived, students were putting their essential skills into action. First of all by gathering as much information as they could about their hosts and the volunteers who were joining them for the day, and then further as they explored the workplace through a tour. Then, in teams, the students were set their Presenting challenge: to take on the role of lawyers and prepare a case for trial. They acted as either prosecution or defence, forming arguments to present in court. They analysed evidence, choosing the most compelling pieces to weave into their case. The day ended with a mock trial in front of a panel of volunteers. They reflected on how they had applied Presenting throughout the challenge and looked ahead to how they could apply this skill again in the future.

The world is changing so fast, and it more important now than ever to teach these skills. We really use these every single day, no matter what job. It's great they have the opportunity to come here and see them in action.
The reason we do these visits is to prepare our young people for the future, because they are our future and it has been invaluable to have the children here, finding out about the world of work, working alongside amazing employees at Gowling.
I am really proud of my team. We all had different roles and we looked at the Case File and all the information and put it together to come up with our arguements. We all solved the Problem together.
