The Mall Luton
Event date:
Maidenhall Primary School
Maidenhall Primary School in Luton has been working with Enabling Enterprise since 2017 to develop a set of eight Essential Skills in their students. Over the years, students in Year 4 have been developing their Essential Skills through Lesson-Time Projects as well as Challenge Days and Trips to Employers.
The Mall Luton
The Mall is a large shopping centre in the centre of Luton. The centre has 128 shop units occupying 70,100.5 m2 and parking for 2,300 cars. Stores include Argos, Boots, Debenhams, TK Maxx, Wilko, Marks & Spencer, Primark, GAME WHSmith and Shoe Zone.
Retail Revamp
The day started off with students interviewing volunteers to find out about their different roles, responsibilities and the Essential Skills required to do their jobs. They particularly focused on how the volunteers use both Creativity and Teamwork in their roles. Students then went on a tour of the retail space, which allowed the teams to see the great variety of jobs available in the retail industry. Next, the students needed to design a brand-new retail space. Having looked at some examples they put together the perfect floor plan, making sure to consult their volunteers on placement of key requirements such as tills and product displays. Finally, the teams presented their ideas back to a panel of volunteer judges by giving them a virtual tour of their new premises, showing off how well they could use both their Teamwork and Creativity Skills.

Students design their floor plans
It's been a brilliant day! The children have been really engaged all day thanks to the fast pace. They have had to really listen to each other and work together in teams to complete the challenge.
My favourite part was when we went downstairs in the Mall to the recycling area. We've had fun making a shop plan. The biggest challenge was teamwork because at school we work by ourselves a lot.
All the teams have done so well! I was really impressed. They have used lots of teamwork skills - teams worked together really well to put their ideas into their floor plan.
