Media Literacy CPD Training for Secondary School Teachers

Only 2% of the UK's 8- to 16-year olds are able to spot fake news. Urgent intervention is needed to ensure all young people receive high-quality media literacy education. The Student View is a digital media literacy charity working to create a newsroom in every school and ensure all young people become critical media consumers.

The Media Literacy Champions programme has two aspects: 'Train-the-trainer' live training sessions - available until end of January 2024 - and beyond that, free resources for students, which are available forever!

The 'train-the-trainer' programme for secondary school teachers focusses on building students' ability to effectively navigate online news and media and become critical consumers of information.

The programme is delivered over three virtual, live modules (via Zoom) with investigative journalist group Belling cat and media literacy experts The Student View.

Classroom and lesson plan resources for Years 8-10, developed with The PSHE Association, are available for free on The Student View website for all teachers to implement in the classroom. Additional resources developed by The Student View are available for ages 16+.

The curriculum supports Listening, Problem Solving, Speaking and Staying Positive skills development throughout the resources, and students are encouraged to reflect on their learning and progress through highlighted questions for use in the classroom or independently.  Through targeted survey questions, they then reflect on the progress they have made and are supported to reflect on this.
