Words for Work: Dream Big (KS1)

The National Literacy Trust is an independent charity working with schools and communities to give disadvantaged children the literacy skills to succeed in life.

Words for Work: Dream Big provides children with the essential literacy skills they need to shape and achieve their aspirations. The programme helps children aged 5-7 years old to imagine their futures and how they will use the skills they are learning at school when they are older.

Through a variety of interactive play and skills-building activities, the programme provides an authentic way for young children to practise language and literacy.

Together with schools and local businesses the programme’s aims are:

• To raise aspirations for primary school pupils, increase awareness of different future careers and challenge stereotypes
• To improve skills needed for the future such as reading, writing and communication
• To demonstrate why literacy is important for future success

Throughout the Key Stage 1 programme, there is a focus on aged 5-7 years old children exploring how the literacy skills they learn in the primary classroom can be transferred to life outside education. Specific focus steps from the Skills Builder Universal Framework are referenced within the programme’s lesson plans and children’s resources, giving learners the opportunity to reflect upon their own skills. Throughout the programme, all the activities are aligned to the skill.
