Context
ODM Global School, located in the capital city of Bhubaneswar (BBSR), is a pioneer of educational excellence in Odisha. Continuing the legacy of our parent organisation - ODM Educational Group, we offer a comprehensive CBSE curriculum enhanced by world-class facilities and a cutting-edge course of education to cultivate global citizens.
Overall impact
The Skills Builder Accelerator programme helped us to build our students' communication skills within the existing curriculum. We created plans to develop Listening and Speaking with a small trial of learners in a weekly Global Club. Learners developed their essential skills and reflected in a structured way on the development of their communication skills during the club programme.
Keep it simple
We used the icons from the Universal Framework in our lesson activities to reinforce essential skills. We also discussed the relevant skill steps from the Universal Framework with members of the Global Club. This has helped to build their understanding and introduced a shared language for reflecting on essential skills. We reviewed the existing curriculum and selected the most relevant skill steps and then used teaching resources from Skills Builder to reinforce learning. We also used positive praise and group discussions to encourage and reward students.
Start early, keep going
We launched essential skills with a trial in a weekly club that includes 3 groups from various age ranges from our school. Lessons from this year’s trial will be applied to our teaching areas next year.
Measure it
We used offline assessment to assess the progress of students based on teacher observations, questioning and group discussions. We also asked students to reflect on their own and their peers' essential skills during a range of activities. We plan to use the Hub platform next year to provide an online form of assessment.
Focus tightly
The Global Club takes place weekly for 2 hours. It has a pre-planned curriculum with structured circle time. We incorporated Speaking and Listening activities weekly and used it as an opportunity for students to build and reflect on their essential skills.
Keep practising
Students from the club had opportunities to discuss essential skills in other clubs and subjects that contained activities that included Speaking and Listening skills.
Bring it to life
We offer a wide range of school clubs at ODM Global School that promote a structured environment where talent meets expert instruction. Students are offered these opportunities to experience the enriching potential. Each club gives our students an opportunity to demonstrate their essential skills in real world situations.
What's next
Next year we will build on the trial that we started this year and link essential skills to a wider range of our specialised clubs so that students can build the skills they are interested in developing in an explicit and structured way.
