Our unique school curriculum combined with world-class facilities and infrastructure incorporates all the aspects of top international schools. Continuing the three-decades-long legacy of ODM Educational Group, our Global School is a happy and welcoming home-away-from-home with excellent facilities for students and one of the best schools in Eastern India.
Overall impact
The Global Club was used to engage the students in this programme and improve their communication skills. The Skills Builder training was very helpful for teachers, as we got access to the essential skill resources and learnt how to implement a plan for the development of Listening and Speaking with learners in the Global Club. Learners were able to develop their essential skills and practise these new communication skills in the global club and other areas of their studies.
Keep it simple
All teachers were introduced to essential skills and the Universal Framework to build their understanding of the importance of these skills for their students and introduce a shared way for them to talk about and develop these skills. All the teachers were committed to create a positive learning environment and to trial adapting their teaching practice to include essential skill activities. Selected teachers were given additional support to incorporate this into the Global Club’s existing programme. These teachers used teaching resources from Skills Builder and used visuals from Speaking and Listening to reinforce learning. We also used positive praise and group discussions to encourage and reward students in the Global Club.
Start early, keep going
We launched essential skills with a trial in the Global Club, in 3 age groups: 9 to 11, 12 to 15 and 16 to 18 as these age groups all participate in this activity. This year’s trail in the Global Club will be used as a test to apply to wider areas next year.
Measure it
We decided to start all students at step zero for Speaking and Listening and then assess their progress using teacher observations, questioning and group discussions. We also asked students to reflect on their own and their peers' essential skills during a range of Global Club activities.
Focus tightly
In the Global Club we used resources from the Skills Builder HUB, including essential skill assemblies, the Speaking and Listening workbooks and workshops and other activities. These resources were incorporated into class activities and co-academic activities. As all students are different, we used various approaches, for example public speaking, reading, extempore speeches, assemblies, singing, news reading and role play activities to build and reflect on the students’ essential skills.
Keep practising
Across other areas of the school, we asked teachers to incorporate the language of the essential skills. Every teacher was asked to discuss essential skills with the students and provide an opportunity to relate with the skill through their subject.
Bring it to life
At ODM Sapphire Global School, we are dedicated to fostering the growth of diverse talents and potential of our young ODMians through an array of specialised clubs. These clubs are precisely formed to provide professional training and development opportunities that enable students to explore their passion and skills in various fields. Accessible to each and every student concerning their age group, school clubs at ODM Sapphire Global School promote a structured environment where talent meets expert instruction. Students are offered these opportunities to experience the enriching potential. Each club convenes for approximately two hours once a week, ensuring a balanced approach to skill development and academic responsibilities.
What's next
Next year we will build on the trial that we started this year and aim to build a plan that includes wider areas of the school. We can also link essential skills to our specialised clubs so that students can build the skills they are interested in developing.
