Context
Our school is a traditional primary school with a long history, committed not only to providing high-quality education but also to supporting students' personal development, creating a safe and positive school environment, and implementing modern teaching methods. We actively promote language learning, international cooperation, student council activities, project-based learning, and the development of students' communication and social skills. We place great emphasis on connecting learning with real-life situations, experiential learning, interdisciplinary teaching, and encouraging students to take an active role in school life. School life includes themed project days, creative workshops, school events, educational trips, international activities, student presentations, adaptation programmes, and student council initiatives. At the lower secondary level, we have introduced the Skills Builder programme, gradually integrating the development of essential skills into everyday lessons and tutor sessions.
Overall impact
The Skills Builder Accelerator programme has significantly influenced the way we think about education and our everyday work with students. It has provided us with a shared language for developing essential skills across subjects and throughout the whole school. We have begun to systematically integrate skills such as teamwork, leadership, communication, creativity, problem solving, and self-reflection into our teaching. These skills are developed not only during regular lessons but also through project days, school events, student council activities, adaptation programmes, and experiential learning. The programme has also had a positive impact on our school culture. Lessons now provide more opportunities for learning from mistakes, reflection, peer feedback, and active student participation. Students are gradually becoming more confident in working together, expressing their opinions, and taking responsibility for their own learning.
Principle 1: Align
Visual displays in classrooms where Skills Builder is implemented help reinforce and remind students of the individual skill steps during everyday learning. Classroom displays focus on each essential skill and its progression, giving students a clear understanding of what they are currently working on. Teachers use simple and consistent language when referring to skills across different subjects. Skills are regularly named and discussed during group work, projects, and reflection activities, making them easier for students to understand and transfer into different situations.
Principle 2: Plan
We have systematically introduced the development of essential skills across the lower secondary school and continue to involve more teachers and subjects each year. Essential skills are not limited to one-off projects but are regularly embedded in everyday teaching. Students encounter these skills repeatedly throughout the school year in a variety of contexts, including project-based learning, presentations, collaborative work, tutor lessons, and school events. This consistent and long-term approach helps students build healthy learning habits, confidence, and resilience.
Principle 3: Measure
We systematically monitor the development of students' essential skills, not only their academic achievements. During this school year, we have been piloting a Skills Builder self-assessment system in which students regularly use self-reflection worksheets and stickers to record their progress in each skill. This allows them to recognise their strengths, understand what they are currently working on, and identify their next steps. Reflection, self-assessment, and peer feedback have become a regular part of classroom practice. Students learn to recognise their strengths, provide constructive feedback to classmates, and evaluate collaborative work in pairs and groups. Teachers use the Skills Builder skill steps when planning lessons and assessing students' progress across a wide range of activities. We focus not only on final outcomes but also on the learning process itself, including teamwork, communication, organisation, problem solving, active listening, and taking responsibility for learning. This enables students to monitor and consciously develop their skills over time.
Principle 4: Teach
When planning learning activities, we always identify a specific skill and a specific skill step to focus on. This ensures that students clearly understand which aspect of their development they are working on. For example, during team activities we intentionally develop teamwork and leadership; during presentations we focus on communication and active listening; while project days often target creativity or problem-solving. This makes the skills more concrete and accessible for students.
Principle 5: Practise
We provide regular opportunities for students to practise essential skills through collaborative activities, project-based learning, discussions, experiential learning, and whole-school events. Students participate in activities focused on teamwork, communication, and creative problem-solving. They complete practical tasks, present their ideas, organise school events, and actively contribute to school life through the student council. Lessons also include experiential activities and structured reflection, such as team challenges, project days, and creative workshops, where students naturally develop essential skills in a supportive and safe environment.
Principle 6: Apply
We help students understand that essential skills are valuable not only at school but also in everyday life, future careers, and personal relationships. Students apply these skills while organising school events, participating in the student council, working on projects, giving presentations, and collaborating during educational trips and adaptation programmes. We regularly use real-life situations in our teaching and encourage students to become responsible, independent, and effective collaborators. An important part of our approach is strengthening connections with the wider school community and encouraging students to play an active role in shaping the world around them.
What's next
Our goal is to continue expanding the Skills Builder programme across the whole school and to strengthen collaboration among teachers. We want the development of essential skills to become a natural and integral part of both everyday teaching and school life. We plan to continue developing classroom displays and visual resources, further promote student self-assessment and reflection, and share examples of effective practice among staff. One of our key priorities is to continue building a safe, open, and supportive school environment where students feel confident to communicate, collaborate, learn from mistakes, and actively participate in school life.
