Context
We are a private school that places strong emphasis on an individual approach to every student. This allows us to effectively develop students’ strengths while supporting areas where they need improvement. As a result, students build strong relationships with both their classmates and teachers across different year groups. Our classes regularly rank among the top 10% of schools in the Czech Republic in national comparative tests in Czech language, mathematics, general study prerequisites, and English. A significant part of our educational program is the personal and social development of our students. The “Be Yourself” program includes regular self-development lessons, bonding courses at the beginning of the school year, thematic courses for students in grades 5 to 9, and other activities during the school year.
Overall impact
Since 2010, we have been systematically developing soft skills among both students and teachers. The Skills Builder methodology provides a structured system for developing soft skills and tools for self-assessment. This methodology is an integral part of the school's strategic documents and is implemented by a specially trained team of teachers and external consultants.
Keep it simple
Skills and their individual steps are clearly presented in common areas of the school as well as in classrooms. Each month we focus on one skill, which students practice through challenges also at home. Teachers meet monthly to share their experience and prepare for the upcoming month and the next skill.
Start early, keep going
Thanks to close cooperation with our kindergarten, we create a continuous system of soft skill development from the age of 2.5 to 15 years.
Measure it
Class teachers evaluate their class’s level in the skill they will focus on the following month. The progress of individual students is regularly monitored using oral assessments, written feedback in report cards, self-assessments (included in student portfolios – tripartite reviews), peer feedback, and other age-appropriate methods. Younger students (aged 6–10) use smiley face ratings alongside written and graphic comments, and they also use a “skills tree” to reflect on current situations. Older students (aged 10–16) use creative self-assessment methods such as mind maps, free writing, or emotion trees.
Focus tightly
Each month, teachers concentrate on developing one skill. The planning and selection of activities are based on methodological meetings, an in-house activity bank compiled over previous years, and teachers’ personal experience.
Keep practising
Soft skills are part of weekly self-development lessons (“S” lessons), integrated into both academic subjects and extracurricular activities. Almost every school event (bonding courses, thematic courses, project days, etc.) is connected to soft skills development. The after-school club and parents also actively support these skills.
Bring it to life
We organize charitable and creative events that connect the school with the wider community—for example, “Painting for a Good Cause” (for students in grades 1–5) and “100 Words for a Good Cause” (for students in grades 6–9). This event connects the elementary and grammar school, where older students search for a non-profit organization to receive the donated funds. Students enhance their communication skills by debating which organization or individual to support that year. They develop creativity while making artwork and stories. The entire charitable project culminates in a garden party and the ceremonial handing over of a cheque to the chosen organization. This event supports goal-setting, communication and presentation skills, creativity, and more.
What's next
The school's long-term goal is to improve the interconnected system of soft skills development for children from preschool through the end of primary school. We also share our experience with other schools through visits and expert consultations.
