Context
School Motto: “Where there are no relationships, there is no performance!” Mnichovice School is a school with nearly a century-long tradition. It is located in a small town within close proximity to Prague, connected not only by the D1 highway but also by a railway line. This location attracts new residents who work in Prague and commute daily, while preferring to raise their children in a natural environment with access to quality education near their homes. This presents a challenge for the school and creates pressure to continuously improve educational offerings, quality, safety, and public engagement. The school has a capacity of 850 students and currently employs 85 teaching staff and 40 non-teaching staff. In the new school year, the school is opening a grammar school class (four-year program), which will further drive dynamic development. Beyond educational goals, the school also fulfills social and developmental roles—it serves as a community center for Mnichovice. Educational activities emphasize the close connection between relationships and performance, using modern teaching methods (RWCT, Skills Builder), extensive digitalization and IT, international programs (Erasmus), and foreign language support (CLIL method, more foreign language instructors, etc.). The school fosters a safe, supportive, and inspiring climate with a focus on partnership communication. It builds on democratic principles and aims to create a healthy environment for all. One of the key goals is the development of soft skills. Systematic and careful support of soft skills development is seen as essential in today’s dynamic society. Focus areas include communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and more. Recently, the school has emphasized wellbeing—for students, teachers, staff, and parents—who are actively involved in the school’s community life. Mental health is a growing focus. The Skills Builder project has been a significant part of this vision. In September 2024, the school joined the program, training teachers from all levels and the school club. Five Skills Builder leaders introduced the methodology throughout the year, supporting the targeted implementation of soft skills. The school is committed to continuous professional development for its staff. Students participate in various competitions and gifted programs, and the school also supports social initiatives—collaborating with senior homes, kindergartens, special schools, and animal shelters. The goal is to be a high-quality school—a place where everyone feels safe and can fully develop their potential. A school that students, teachers, and parents feel connected to, building a future together.
Overall impact
The development of soft skills is based on five key principles of the Skills Builder methodology:
Keep it simple
This principle motivated the staff to adopt the methodology easily. A clear and transparent plan was created, starting with “Listening” and “Presentation Skills.”
Start early, keep going
Activities were introduced at the beginning of the school year by five Skills Builder leaders. Other teachers observed their lessons and participated in regular feedback sessions and monthly staff meetings. Bi-monthly individual sharing sessions were also held. The methodology and its icons became part of the school’s visual identity. A parent café introduced the program to families.
Measure it
Teachers track student progress individually. Some use portfolios maintained by students, which are also used in triadic meetings (student-parent-teacher). Others use tracking sheets or official Skills Builder notebooks, especially in lower grades.
Focus tightly
In the first year, the school focused on two soft skills: Listening skills Presentation skills These are integrated into class time, homeroom sessions, and extracurricular activities like sports courses and field trips.
Keep practising
The entire staff supports the development of soft skills across all subjects. Homeroom sessions are especially focused on practicing and reflecting on progress.
Bring it to life
The school is a pillar of the Mnichovice community, organizing events for students, staff, parents, and the public. Students actively participate, practicing soft skills in real-life situations—e.g., Parent Cafés, Student Parliament, Open Days, Children’s Day, Sports Olympics, Project Days, international trips, Wellbeing Week, and collaborations with external experts.
What's next
The school plans to continue systematic support for soft skills. With the opening of the grammar school program, Skills Builder will be introduced there as well. The school aims to maintain collaboration with Schola Empirica, which guided them through the first year. Soft skills are seen as essential for students to lead fulfilling and successful personal and professional lives.
