Essential Skills Masterclass sessions at Harrow College Uxbridge College (HCUC) give students the opportunity to reflect on and develop their essential skills with the support of the Skills Builder delivery team and professionals from across Team Heathrow.

The project focuses on developing the employability skills and confidence of learners with additional needs at the college. Bringing together a focus on essential skills with a range of insights from a local employer, students are given the opportunity to reflect on their own strengths and consider how these skill sets could shape their aspirations for higher education and employment.

Working alongside volunteers from partner organisation Heathrow, students are introduced to the essential skills and their importance in all aspects of our lives. They then put these essential skills into practice by:

  • Using communication skills to interview volunteers and find out more about their roles across the airport and beyond.
  • Applying Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to work through a real-life scenario from Heathrow, drawing upon the volunteers' expertise to make informed decisions.
  • Hearing how the volunteers use Creativity and Aiming High skills in their roles and reflecting on their own use of these skills.
  • Using Leadership and Teamwork skills to consider Heathrow’s Sustainability goals and set their own targets on micro and macro levels.
