YMCA Trinity Life Skills is a programme for young people to develop everyday essential life skills using workshops and one-to-one learning with resources available online.

Managing a tenancy for the first time can be hard work. YMCA Trinity Group will support clients to learn everything they need to know from: how to pay rent, setting up gas/ electricity, reporting repairs and even changing a lightbulb!

Using the Universal Framework, the Life Skills provide the young people who live with in YMCA accommodation the support to learn and develop. Modules are available online providing flexible access at any time in line with individuals needs and requirements. This person-centred approach to learning gives young people a sense of agency over their future and control over their personal development and progress.

YMCA use the skills to support coaching of young people on some of the skills needed to get ready for independence, such as:

  • Budgeting, managing wages/Universal Credit
  • Paying rent and bills and managing direct debits
  • Shopping and cooking for yourself on a budget
  • Keeping everything clean and tidy
  • Keeping on top of your laundry
  • Getting qualifications and finding work
  • Understanding tenancy agreements and what you must do
  • What to do if you have issues with the people living near you and how to keep yourself safe
  • Reporting repairs and what you can do yourself e.g. decorating.
