The Essential Skills Advantage: Human Skills in an Age of AI - Launch event

The world of work is changing quickly, and artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how we all think about the future. But as technology advances, how can we prepare our children and young people to thrive in an AI-enabled future?

To answer this, we are thrilled to share our latest research paper, supported by KPMG: The Essential Skills Advantage: Human Skills in the Age of AI.

Watch the webinar below for some powerful insights, as a global panel including Tom Ravenscroft (Skills Builder Partnership), Roisin Murphy (KPMG International), Erinn Corbett-Wright (Salesforce), Marco Shek (Ednovators), Egle Hardorva (Schola Empirica) and Edward Sara-Kennedy (Coschool) discuss what it will take for diverse education systems seize the opportunities and manage the risks so that children and young people are set up to thrive.

You can watch the full conversation below:

During the session, we explored how the most valuable asset in a highly technological world is actually our distinctly human capability to apply essential skills such as Creativity and Problem Solving alongside technology.

Key takeaways from the discussion:

  • Technology is projected to transform 1.1 billion jobs over the next decade (source: The World Economic Forum). However, a person's ability to use AI safely and effectively is underpinned by essential human skills like Leadership, Teamwork, Listening, and Problem Solving.
  • There is a clear link between human skills and digital confidence. Workers who frequently use AI in professional settings have an average essential skill score that is 6% higher than those who do not use these tools.
  • AI can generate ideas quickly, but it still requires a creative human mind to evaluate data, recognise errors, and turn a raw concept into a working solution.
  • Countries all over the world are testing fresh ways to prepare young people for the future. From connecting AI policy to emotional wellbeing in Colombia, to reframing AI to support young people’s economic futures in Japan, there is a global movement toward integrating essential skills and digital tools.
  • To ensure all young people can thrive, we need a combined effort from education systems, businesses, and governments to build these core capabilities early on.
