Friends and Families is a Plymouth-based charity who support and empower families with children living with a disability.  They do this by providing services and activities for the whole family, so that everyone gets to live their best life.

The charity's vision is for a world where families and their children, irrespective of their disability or impairment, can reach their full potential and thrive.

The Staff Recruitment and Development Programme at Friends and Families is now ensuring the charity takes a complete approach to personal development, externally through its services and activities and now internally through the personal and professional development of its team.

As part of the employee cycle, Friends and Families will embed the essential skills within policies and practices in relation to Job Descriptions, Onboarding Programmes, 1:1s, Appraisals, and within relevant People Policies.  In addition, they will identify an organisation-wide commitment to a maximum of four skill steps to discuss and reflect during a 12-month period as a team.

The Skills Builder Framework will be used consistently across staff recruitment and development. This will be evidenced by:

  • Skill Icons being included on recruitment and staff development documentation
  • Skill icons being displayed around the office
  • The Universal Framework forming part of discussions within 1:1s and appraisals, with individuals (not Line Managers) empowered to identify areas of focus
  • Agenda item on Team Meetings to discuss organisation-wide essential skill steps
  • Policies and procedures to include essential skills and links to the Skills Builder website
