Our work in Yorkshire and Humber

Over the last few years, there’s been some brilliant progress happening in schools and colleges in the North East, where we work with more than 20 Primaries, 10 Secondaries, 3 Special Schools and 2 Colleges.

High quality programmes that provide opportunities to boost students’ essential skills are recognised by Skills Builder Awards. Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards are given to those modelling best practice in essential skills education by embedding our six principles:

In 2021, 302 schools and colleges achieved an Award across the UK. 90 of these chose to submit a Case Study. You can explore the full Case Study Showcase here, but here are just a few highlights…

Menston Primary School is a larger than average primary school located in Ilkley, Bradford. They have used Skills Builder as part of their curriculum redesign and see Skills Builder as the golden thread which weaves together the different aspects of their work.

"The programme has helped staff to feel confident about delivering direct skills teaching and has given them a clear framework to work to. For our children, it has helped them to develop as learners by understanding that skills are also things we also need to learn and that we can all improve in these areas just as we do in maths, for example. It has helped them to be more confident as a result. Parental response to reports last year was very positive."

St Cuthberts and the First Martyrs’ Catholic Primary School is a single-form entry Catholic primary school in Bradford. 80% of pupils live in areas considered to be the 30% most deprived in the UK. They have used Skills Builder to underpin their curriculum development and ensure that young people are equipped with the skills needed to be successful.

‘We continue to be impressed with Skills Builder: the principles, the resources and the impact. The true testament to the success of the programme is seeing how confident, articulate and respectful our pupils are when they leave our school. They apply these skills and abilities to all aspects of their lives.’
