Brett Kingsnorth from Mount Grace School

Brett Kingsnorth is a Citizenship and History teacher at Mount Grace School in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire. Mount Grace School has high performing specialist status in Applied Learning, Business and Enterprise.

How do they use the Skills Builder Framework?

Brett has been using the Framework to teach his students the essential skills they need for success in and beyond school. He has been using the short skill videos that teach the different steps of the framework: for example, he’s been using the Teamwork videos before getting his classes to do group work in their Citizenship lessons and Year 13 are working through the Leadership ones.

What's been the impact of using the Framework?

Year 12 have been working through the Aiming High videos in their mentor sessions and as a result, they have been better prepared to complete their personal statements. Brett has noticed that students in his Citizenship classes are able to work more effectively with one another having built their Teamwork skills through the video activities.

How do they plan to use the Framework in the future?

Mount Grace are looking to use the videos that teach the steps of the framework across the school, from Years 7-13, in their mentor sessions to ensure all their students build the essential skills for success.

I used the Aiming High and Staying Positive videos with my GCSE Citizenship classes leading up to their GCSE Citizenship Exams. The school GCSE Citizenship results this summer were nearly twice the national average (15%A*-A) at 28% A*- A. I believe that the videos have played a big role in this huge success.

A lot of what I’ve had positive feedback on is the teachers reading the guides on how to develop the skills. It’s great, free CPD.

The videos are in a very simple format – they say at the start what you do so you don’t need to prepare too much. I think the videos are well explained and the activities are really interesting.
